Camp WAVE is a STEM and animal science focused day camp hosted at Newport Aquarium. Campers will explore the wide variety of animals and ecosystmes found on Earth. Campers might team up to use animal super powers (adaptations) to defeat a challenging predator, or search the vast oceans for incredible and diverse shark species.

What makes Camp Wave unique?
Camp WAVE is hosted by WAVE Foundation at Newport Aquarium, giving campers access to the incredible wildlife that calls this place home. Campers will meet penguins, sharks, stingrays, and more each week. Exploration and investigation are at the heart of our STEM curriculum, fostering the scientist in every camper. Our location along the Ohio River also gives ample opportunity for outdoor activities to put concepts into practice learning about the waterways in our backyard.
What activities are offered at Camp Wave?
Camp WAVE is a STEM and aquatic science focused camp hosted at Newport Aquarium. Most activities will center around the animals and ecosystems seen at the Aquarium. Campers can expect to participate in animal encounters, science experiments, conservation activities, group projects, crafts, and games. Campers will interact with aquatic scientists from around the world via Zoom as well as the animal experts we have here at the Aquarium and other content area experts in our local region. What is the camper-to-counselor ratio?
Campers will be in small groups based on grade level in a 10:1 ration of campers to counselors.
How much time do the campers spend outside?
Campers will be outside for portions of every day. They should come ready for weather, rain or shine. Outdoor comfort and exploration is a great skill for young students and our location along the Ohio River, access to local parks, and focus on STEM activities provide great opportunities for outdoor learning.
Does the camp provide lunch/snacks or do parents need to provide them?
Camp WAVE does not provide lunch, campers should bring this each day. One snack will be provided in the afternoon, in compliance with any public health guidelines in place this summer. Allergy friendly snacks will be provided when needed.
What is the typical daily schedule for campers?
8-8:20am – Arrival and morning meeting with class
8:20-10am – Activity block 1
10-11am – Activity block 2
11-11:30am – Lunch
11:30-12pm – Recess – outside whenever possible
12-1:30pm – Activity block 3 and 4
1:30-2pm – Quiet time – coloring, reading, audio book, nap, or other based on age
2-3:30pm – Activity block 5 and 6
3:30-4pm – Packing and Camper Pick-up
How old are the counselors and how are they trained?
Counselors must be over the age of 18, and will be first aid and CPR certified. Counselors are trained by our Education Management team to ensure comfort and understanding of child development, social emotional learning, outdoor safety, and positive discipline practices. Counselors will also receive training on K-8 science education practices to ensure Camp WAVE is both fun, and engaging for students.
What accommodations are made for campers with special needs?
Any special needs of campers will be addressed individually to ensure all campers can participate to the fullest of their interest. Accommodations are in place for handicapped access and allergy monitoring. Please communicate any needs of your camper on your registration form, or contact camp staff to discuss plans for the summer.
