Docentitos Academy at the Weston Art Gallery

The Weston Art Gallery announces the twenty-fourth season of its award-winning art ambassadorial program, Docentitos. The two-week summer camp trains youths ages 9-12 to be gallery docents. Docentitos experience the important role of being a volunteer, gain knowledge of visual art terminology, go on art-related field trips, and ultimately, use all they’ve learned to tour exhibition visitors.

Q&A with Docentitos Academy at the Weston Art Gallery:

What makes Docentitos Academy unique?

In this unique program, campers develop public speaking, presentation, collaboration, and interpersonal skills, while getting an insider’s view of how a visual art exhibition develops. Docentitos create scripts and presentations based upon the exhibitions, to then lead tours on opening night and throughout the summer.

What activities are offered at Docentitos Academy?

Daily activities include classes, artist talks, theater tours, workshops, installation and studio visits, and an art project.

What is the camper-to-counselor ratio?

The Docentitos Academy enrolls 8 to 12 students per summer with one instructor and one instructor’s assistant. Staff of the gallery and of the Cincinnati Arts Association offer additional support and instruction throughout the course of the program.

How much time do the campers spend outside?

While the role of a docent primarily takes place within the interior space of the gallery, there are ample opportunities for Docentitos to get out and get some fresh air. Several field trips are planned for each week of the camp – from an artist’s studio visit to downtown walks to view public art and visit museums.

Does Docentitos Academy provide lunch/snacks or do parents need to provide them?

We ask that campers bring a snack and lunch daily to camp in order to accommodate individual dietary needs. However, we will ensure that Docentitos remain well hydrated!

What accommodations are made for campers with special needs?

The Weston Art Gallery is ADA accessible.
