German Heritage, One Festival at a Time
Southwest Ohio’s German roots go back to the 1800s, and the region still marks that heritage with a long run of festivals stretching from June through October. Some are century-old traditions run by German-American clubs. Others are newer events hosted by local breweries riding the Oktoberfest wave. Together they give Cincinnati and Dayton-area families a half-dozen chances to hear polka music, eat spätzle and bratwurst, and let kids run around a biergarten before bedtime.
Below is a rundown of the major German fests happening in and around Southwest Ohio in 2026, in order by date. Hours, admission and vendor lineups can shift close to the date, so the official links are worth a check before heading out.
September: Oktoberfest Season
September is when the season peaks, with festivals stacked across nearly every weekend in Cincinnati, Northern Kentucky and Dayton.
Liberty Home German Club Oktoberfest
This Hamilton-area club is marking its 60th anniversary in 2026, with a weekend that includes carnival rides, games and live entertainment on top of the usual food and beer.

Covington Oktoberfest
Just across the river from downtown Cincinnati, this festival replaced the longtime MainStrasse Village Oktoberfest after that event’s organizing association went bankrupt. Braxton Brewing now runs it out of Goebel Park, with the festival footprint expanding onto 6th and Main streets for 2026.

Newport Oktoberfest
Newport’s riverfront festival park hosts its own German-themed weekend the same days as Covington’s, on the Kentucky side of the river near Newport on the Levee.

MadTree Zieglerfest
Oakley Square packs two German-themed events into the same weekend. MadTree’s Oakley taproom hosts Zieglerfest with German-inspired food and games, while Oaktoberfest takes over Geier Esplanade with music, face painting and MadTree beer.

Highgrain Brewery’s Silverton taproom hosts a smaller neighborhood-scale Oktoberfest with music, beer and games.

Oktoberfest Zinzinnati
Cincinnati’s flagship festival is billed as the largest Oktoberfest celebration in the United States, drawing more than 800,000 people in recent years. It marks its 50th anniversary in 2026 along the riverfront at Sawyer Point and Yeatman’s Cove, with five entertainment stages, the World’s Largest Chicken Dance and the Running of the Wieners. A new addition for 2026 is a two-story, 31-foot glockenspiel with its own biergarten.

Dayton Art Institute Oktoberfest
Dayton’s version is the museum’s largest annual fundraiser and, per the Dayton Art Institute, southwest Ohio’s longest-running Oktoberfest, dating to 1971. The weekend includes a covered main stage and food court, a family activity tent from noon to 5 p.m. each day, and a steinholding competition on Sunday. Everyone over 21 is wristbanded at the gate under Ohio liquor law, regardless of what they plan to drink.

Oktoberfest with MPH Brewing and Sonder & Friends Oktoberfest
Two suburban breweries close out the month on the same Saturday. Montgomery Public House hosts a keg blessing and festival entertainment, while Sonder Brewing in Mason pairs its Oktoberfest with a 5K run followed by a party featuring roughly 22 breweries pouring German-style beers.

St. Cecilia Oktoberfest

Most of these festivals are held rain or shine, with no refunds for weather. The larger ones — Oktoberfest Zinzinnati and Covington Oktoberfest — are free to enter, which makes them the easiest option for families testing the waters before committing to a ticketed event like Dayton’s. For the club-run festivals like Schützenfest and Germania, arriving earlier in the day tends to mean shorter food lines and a calmer Kinderplatz for younger kids before the evening crowds arrive.
