MamLuft&Co. Dance is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization with a resident Modern Dance company of professionals who provide education, outreach, and performance based in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Long Business Description:

MamLuft&Co. Dance is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization with a resident Modern Dance company of professionals who provide education, outreach, and performance based in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Founded in 2007, ML&Co. focuses primarily on creating original evening-length works.

In support of this endeavor to create substantial opportunities for local artists while producing original Modern Dance, the Company received a National Endowment for the Arts grant in 2017 to create new works in Cincinnati. (According to NEA’s database, this was the first and only award to do so, at least since 1998, in Cincinnati.)

MamLuft&Co. Dance was awarded “Best Dance Company Pushing the Envelope” by CityBeat staff in 2012 and “Best Design Concept” in the 2013 Cincinnati Fringe Festival by the League of Cincinnati Theatres. In 2015, The Cincinnati Enquirer‘s David Lyman named MamLuft&Co. Dance amongst only the Cincinnati Ballet and Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre as the year’s “exceptional moments in dance,” calling a performance by ML&Co. “enlightening.”

Through highly collaborative processes, the Company creates intricately staged, physically-demanding dance theatre. Its performer-collaborators over the years have come originally from all across the country (for example, Nebraska, New York, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia), as well as Mexico.

To reduce barriers to arts experiences, and Modern Dance in particular, ML&Co.’s subject matter aims to be relevant and resonant across cultures, classes, and backgrounds. Prior works have examined such issues as belonging, shifts of power, communal resolution, aging, and memory loss.

The company has created works for the camera, including two half-hour films, Latitude (2012) and Unyielding (2013), which was the first and only dance project to be supported by a City of Cincinnati Arts Fellowship.

MamLuft&Co. Dance believes in connecting the public with excellent art, and to do so, has collaborated with international sound artist Allard Van Hoorn, the Contemporary Arts Center, the Cincinnati Art Museum, concert:nova, Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra, Constella Festival, and many others.

Beyond the stage, MamLuft&Co. Dance serves thousands of children and families each year through education and outreach programs. Currently active 6 days a week through numerous programs in 9 different areas of neighborhood activity, ML&Co. brings dance to many who would not otherwise experience it.

The organization has been awarded funding from the Stillson Foundation (Fifth Third Bank, Trustee), the Greater Cincinnati Foundation, Ohio Arts Council, ArtsWave, the Louise Dieterle Nippert Musical Arts Fund of the Greenacres Foundation, Summerfair Cincinnati, The Louise Taft Semple Foundation, and The Wohlgemuth Herschede Foundation, among others.

My Nose Turns Red Youth Circus
Business Address:
8595817100
Business Genre:
Short Business Description:
My Nose Turns Red (MNTR) is the only non-profit organization in the Greater Cincinnati area dedicated to youth circus. Every year MNTR provides year-round training and performance opportunities for over 400 youth in the art of the one-ring circus and the theatrical clown. We believe that youth circus is a magical blend of theatre, movement, physical fitness, imagination and childlike wonder. Our instructors blend the ability to play with the precision of circus arts to create programs where youth learn teamwork and trust in a non-competitive environment. From beginners’ classes to advanced performance programs, MNTR provides a safe arena for young people to take risks and challenge themselves.

Through the art of the theatrical clown and the one-ring circus, My Nose Turns Red cultivates a supportive environment that inspires youth to challenge themselves, develop essential life skills and engage audiences.

My Nose Turns Red was founded in 1984 when co-founders Jean St. John and Steve Roenker began touring as theatrical clowns Juice and Shootang, bringing their art form to thousands of children through school performances, workshops, and residencies. In 1997, MNTR created a circus program designed to give youth the opportunity to experience the joys and challenges of circus training and performing.
Long Business Description:

My Nose Turns Red Youth Circus has been nationally recognized as a member of the Social Circus Network in a joint project between the American Youth Circus Organization and Cirque du Soleil. The Social Circus Network is designed to bring up-to-date research and resources to the 17-member network to increase youth circus participation and improve program design.

Social Circus is defined as an “innovative social intervention approach based on circus arts. The primary goal is not to learn the circus arts, but rather to assist with participants’ personal and social development by nurturing their self-esteem and trust in others, as well as by helping them to acquire social skills, become active citizens, express their creativity and realize their potential.”

A recent study of the sector research concludes that social circus: promotes physical and mental health and wellness; fosters human connection and belonging; encourages civic engagement and cultural and socio-economic integrations, and builds resilience.

My Nose Turns Red’s strategic plan calls for 30% of enrollment to be at-risk and attend for free. This includes scholarships, a 24-week session at Woodford Paideia Academy, ongoing programming at Diocesan Catholic Children’s Home (12 years), and the TALL Institute, an organization for adults with intellectual and developmental challenges.

MNTR also reaches underserved children by offering full and partial scholarships to our after-school programs, circus classes including the Advanced Circus Ensemble program and summer camps.
