Spring has sprung, and we are feeling all sorts of spring fever here at Cincinnati Parent.
Next week, most local schools are off for Spring Break. With longer days and warmer temps, we cannot think of a better way to celebrate spring, than by flying a kite!
When searching for the perfect kite-flying location, we found that there are a few basic guidelines. You’ll need:
- A large, flat area with lots of room to run, and
- As few trees as possible (because, trees = wind protection. Also, kites get stuck in trees).
With Cincinnati being a City of Seven Hills, finding the perfect place to fly a kite isn’t as simple as heading to the nearest park. So without further ado, here’s our top 7 places to fly a kite:
1. Summit Park
This Blue Ash Park is a 130-acre regional park in the heart of Blue Ash at the site of the former Blue Ash Airport. Its Great Lawn is a great place to fly a kite, as it’s large and open.

2. Lunken Playfield
As with Summit Park, the playground at Lunken Playfield (by the airport) has lots of open, unobstructed green space. As a bonus, the Land of Make Believe is a pretty cool place to play afterwards!
3. Ault Park
Ault’s Great Lawn hosted a rally for President Obama back in ’08, as its size and setup allowed for a big crowd. These features also make Ault awesome for kite flying.

4. Voice of America Park
This West Chester park is prime kite-flying property. Its 435 acres of sprawling greenspace means you’ll have lots of room to fly!
5. Otto Armleder Park
One of Cincinnati’s newest city parks, this 238-acre site features hiking trails, bike path, playground, shelters, recreational fields and meadows (get out your kites!). (This description is from the official park website, so if they’re suggesting we go fly a kite, you know it’s a great place to fly a kite!)
6. Woodland Mound
This Great Park is located off the breezy banks of Ohio River and features a sprawling 18-hole disc golf course — prime kite-flying setup!
7. Miami Meadows Park
Eastsiders love Miami Meadows for its dog park, but there’s also a sizable space devoted to soccer and baseball fields that would be wonderful for flying a kite.
So free your kite from storage and belt out your best rendition of “Let’s Go Fly a Kite” as you take to the park one of these glorious spring afternoons!
