Middletown sits almost exactly between Cincinnati and Dayton, and for three days this month its sky belongs to hot air balloons. The Ohio Challenge returns July 17 to 19, 2026, at Smith Park, with more than 20 balloons launching each evening alongside skydiving demonstrations, a drone and fireworks show, and a kids zone. Gates open at 5 p.m. Friday and 4 p.m. Saturday, and walk-in admission is $10 for anyone over age 12.
The festival has run in Middletown for close to two decades, growing out of the city’s history hosting the U.S. National Hot Air Balloon Championships in the early 1990s. This year’s edition adds an expanded drone show, up from 200 to 350 drones, timed to the country’s 250th anniversary.
What Families Will See and Do
The balloons are the draw, but the schedule is built around two full evenings of programming rather than a single launch window. Both Friday and Saturday follow the same rough shape: balloon inflations and launches starting around 7 p.m., a special shape balloon display sponsored by Meijer at 8:15 p.m., a balloon glow at dusk, and a Team Fastrax skydiving finale that closes with the drone and fireworks show around 10 p.m.
Kids have their own corner of the grounds. The Kid Zone runs both evenings with inflatables sponsored by St. John XXIII Catholic School, and Murry Brothers Carnival brings rides for a range of ages. Tethered hot air balloon rides are available for $25 per person for families who want to go up without leaving the ground, and Butler County Warbirds offers airplane rides from the airport gate. Saturday adds a car show from 4 to 8 p.m.

- Sunday, July 19 is scaled back to a competitive balloon flight only, from 6:30 to 8:30 a.m., with no evening programming.
