Newport Aquarium turns its exhibits into an underwater pumpkin patch again this year. Underwater Pumpkin GLOW runs Sept. 18 through Nov. 1 and is included with general admission or membership, so there is no separate ticket to buy.
What’s in the exhibit
- Giant pumpkin sculptures. Larger-than-life jack-o’-lanterns shaped like sea creatures, including sea turtles and seahorses, plus a 10-foot Giant Pacific Octopus built from pumpkins that glows and doubles as a reef for sharks and fish to explore.
- Pumpkin treats for the animals. Divers carve pumpkins underwater so fish and other animals can eat the pieces as seasonal enrichment.
- All-day glow. The exhibit is indoors, so it’s lit from open to close every day, not just after dark.
New this year
A new roughtail stingray, 5 feet across and more than 9 feet long, has joined the Surrounded By Sharks exhibit in time for the season, swimming among the sharks and glowing pumpkins.
Pumpkin decorating
Kids can paint their own pumpkin using non-toxic acrylic paint markers or one of the stencils provided. It’s available daily in Stingray Hideaway for an additional cost, while supplies last.
Special events
- Member Night. Members get after-hours access Wednesday, Sept. 24, from 5 to 8 p.m., with a Jack-O-Lantern photo op and pumpkin crafting in Stingray Hideaway while supplies last. Redeem the complimentary ticket through the Entitlements section of your online account.
- Fish + Sips: Boos & Bites (21+). This adults-only night runs Friday, Oct. 9, from 7:30 to 11 p.m. Tickets are $84.99 and include costumes, festive food and drinks, and the Monster Mash Silent Disco. Members receive a discount.
