5 Weekend Activities to Beat the Back-to-School Blues

Most area schools are back to school this week, which means that summer’s days are numbered. (Cue the Sad Trombone.) If your kids are bummed about the start of the school year, this weekend’s activities are sure to turn those frowns upside down! From boats to trains, Shakespeare to the Olympics, we’ve got 5 weekend activities sure to beat the back-to-school blues!

 

 

Day Out With Thomas

Rides on Friday, Saturday and Sunday at LM&M Railroad
Day Out with Thomas is family event that offers kids the opportunity to take a ride with the classic storybook engine, Thomas the Tank Engine. Cincinnati’s historic Lebanon Mason Monroe (LM&M) Railroad is hosting this event all weekend long. In addition to Thomas, Sir Topham Hatt will be riding the rails to meet and take pictures with guests. Kids will also be treated to a variety of Thomas & Friends entertainment during the ride, temporary tattoos and Thomas themed crafts. All aboard!

Hamilton Dragon Boat Festival

Saturday, August 20, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at RiversEdge Park & Amphitheater in Dayton
Mark this down as one of the most unique things we’ve come across! A day of colorful, lively fun awaits you at the inaugural Hamilton Dragon Boat Festival presented by the Great Miami Rowing Center. Races in real dragon-disguised boats, Chinese food, culture, and dance combine to make this a day on the Great Miami River that you won’t forget. Totally worth a quick trip up 75!

The City Flea

Saturday, Aug. 20 from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. at Washington Park
Whether you’re a regular flea-goer or first-timer, this August’s Flea is a can’t-miss! For the first time ever, the Flea is letting Cincy’s youngest designers run the show. Kids ages 4-14 will be set up around the bandstand at the south end of Washington Park to sell their goods from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. This is a fantastic outlet for local kids to showcase their wares – your kids are sure to be inspired!

A Midsummer Night’s Dream

Saturday, Aug. 20 from 5:30-9 p.m. at Miami Whitewater Forest
This Saturday, one of Cincinnati’s most acclaimed theater troupes will be performing one of Shakespeare’s funniest comedies at one of Hamilton County’s most gorgeous parks! We know what you’re thinking — Shakespeare? Trust us — the CSC will have you rolling on your picnic blankets! Oh — and this performance is totally free as part of Free Shakespeare in the Park.

Summer Art Games

Sunday, Aug. 21 from 1-4 p.m. at the Taft Museum
If Rio’s gotten your kids inspired, you have to check out this month’s Sunday Funday at the Taft Museum! Kids will get to design their own medals and participate in various competitions throughout the day. Wump Mucket Puppets will pump up the future Olympians with a performance at 2 p.m.
