Coppélia Comes to Life at the Aronoff

Last night, Cincinnati Parent Reporter Ainslie attended Community Night. In partnership with Most Valuable Kids of Greater Cincinnati (MBK), the Cincinnati Ballet opened its doors to children and their families to view the dress rehearsal.

There was a pre-show dance class as well as meet and greet with several ballerinas. This is a once-a-year event; however, this weekend, Coppélia comes to life at the Aronoff.

Here’s Ainslie’s review of The Cincinnati Ballet’s Coppélia:

Last night, I took her daughter and a friend, both in third grade. They absolutely loved the show! There was lots of laughter and oohs and ahhs from the girls during the entire performance. It was highly entertaining. The run time is 2 and 1/2 hours, which includes three acts and two fifteen minute intermissions. coppelia-1This would be a great first ballet production for your child!

The production itself is enchanting. The dancers were stunning in mid-19th century costumes. Their dancing was flawless. Everyone was perfectly in time and make dancing look so easy! The show features original choreography of former Cincinnati Ballet resident choreographer Kirk Peterson.

The music is enchanting. The girls would sway their heads to the music and it is easy to be carried away into this story.

In terms of the story — our favorite part was Act II, Inside the Workshop. The dancing, music and story collided as the dolls came to life, playfully dancing. The girls loved when Swanilda switched places with the doll and tricked Dr. Coppélius into thinking his magic spells brought her to life. Then she saves her true love Franz. The girls love a happily ever after!

Cincinnati Ballet presents Coppélia this weekend for the first time in 15 years. Coppélia has something for everyone — humor, love and lots of magic!
