Hidden Gem: Pyramid Hill

If you’re looking for an off-the-beaten path, outdoor adventure, look no further than Pyramid Hill.

Pyramid Hill is a true hidden gem – it’s tucked away in Butler County off a rolling country road. A bright red sculpture stands at the entryway; and from there, the hills and valleys of Pyramid Hill’s 300 acres are covered with larger-than-life sculptures that demand to be seen (and admired).

Pyramid Hill (website) is an outdoor museum comprised of over 60 monumental pieces of sculpture in an environment of meadows, forests and gardens. The art stands out in a way that’s impossible to miss; you’ll traipse through woods to find rustic sculptures, encounter colorful creations standing front-and-center in a field and admire bright spectacles across rolling fields. Art is everywhere at Pyramid Hill, and that’s kind of the point.

Pyramid Hill originated in 1987 when local art lover Harry T. Wilks purchased 40 acres of land just outside of Hamilton. He wanted to build his home there, and before it was finished in 1992, he’d added several adjoining plots of land. While he received several offers from developers wishing to build on his lush, green land, Wilks instead created a non-profit to which he donated the land, with the intention of building a sculpture park. He began visiting sculptors and purchased several pieces to place in his newly formed park, which opened to the public in 1996.

Since then, Pyramid Hill has been home to rotating pieces, traveling exhibitions, art shows and an annual holiday lights display that’s a must for anyone who appreciates a good light display.

Pyramid Hill is an inspiring place to spend an afternoon. You can wander around on foot, or rent an Art Cart and take in all 300 acres. While the park is quite large, it’s organized into different sections that are quite walkable.

Art is something that’s always changing, depending on your personal experiences, or even the season. Every time we visit Pyramid Hill, I notice something new. Art is something that forces you to feel and experience, and the pieces at Pyramid Hill will evoke different thoughts and feelings for each family member. Pyramid Hill is a place to come face-to-face with art — and that’s a beautiful thing.
