Beat the Winter Blues at Krohn Conservatory

If I had to pick, I’d say that Krohn Conservatory might be my very favorite place in the whole city. It’s green, it’s warm, it’s alive and vibrant and peaceful.

I do not have a green thumb, but I can really appreciate the beauty of all the plants and flowers at Krohn. Add in a few waterfalls, chirping birds and giant goldfish, and Krohn is basically a meditation video. I love it!

It’s no secret that my kids love the outdoors, and the winter can be one big bummer for them, as they crave being outside, touching plants and grass and running in the warmth of the sun. So, when I told them last week that we were going to get to do just that, at the Hatching Spring Blooms show, they were all in! And, naturally, full of questions.

Julian:

Is that where the Venus Fly Trap is?

Will the trains be there?

Why is it called a greenhouse?

Who built it?

What’s a conservatory?

Are there Easter eggs there?

What am I getting for Easter?

What are “blooms?”

Is it far away from our house?

Are you going to be taking pictures?

(Yes — he really did ask all those questions!)

Anyway — the exhibit. Wow. There was so much green! And pink! And yellow! And purple/orange/white. It smelled like spring. It looked like spring. It felt like spring.

There were decorated flower pots full of fresh flowers, painted Easter eggs hanging everywhere, lush “flocks” of grass to walk through. There was so much color — and the kids loved looking at all the painted flower pots.

Hatching Spring Blooms runs through March 13, and during that time, there are lots of special events you’ll want to be aware of:
