If you’re looking for something truly unforgettable to do with the family this summer, the Columbus Zoo’s Lantern Festival is a must-see. Starting July 31 and running through October 5, 2025, the zoo will light up the night with glowing creatures, hands-on fun, and a touch of magic.
What to Expect
On select evenings (Thursday through Sunday, from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m.), the zoo is transformed into a wonderland of light and imagination. As you stroll through the pathways—normally home to bison and moose—you’ll be surrounded by over 60 larger-than-life lanterns, all beautifully handcrafted from silk and bamboo. You’ll spot everything from real animals to mythical ones like dragons, unicorns, and phoenixes.
It’s the kind of experience where your kids’ jaws will drop and your camera roll will quickly fill up.

More Than Just Lights
This isn’t just a walk-through display. The Lantern Festival is filled with interactive features kids will love—like glowing swings, musical stomp pads, and lanterns that respond to touch. It’s a choose-your-own-adventure kind of evening, and there’s something around every corner.
Several rides stay open during the festival too, including the Zoo Train (which gets a special lantern glow-up), Flying Clipper, Tidal Twist, and more. Plus, each night features cultural performances—think acrobats, martial arts, and live music—that add even more energy to the evening.
Tickets and Special Experiences
Festival tickets are sold separately from regular zoo admission, but members do get a discount. If you’re planning a full day at the zoo, you can grab a “Roar & Return” ticket that lets you come back for the evening show at a lower price.
For a more relaxed experience, VIP golf cart tours are available on select weeknights. These guided rides give you a behind-the-scenes look at some of the most intricate lanterns.
Heads up: The festival will be closed on Friday, September 19 for the zoo’s Untamed fundraiser.

Can You Still See the Animals?
Yes—some of them! While many animals head in for the night, exhibits like the sea lions, elephants (until 8 p.m.), and manatees (until around 8:30 p.m.) will still be viewable. It’s a fun bonus to see some of your zoo favorites lit up in the evening glow.
