Kids are notorious for changing their minds. One day they love apples and the next day they won’t touch them. There is one thing that does stay pretty consistent around our house: a love of airplanes.
Living in Northern Kentucky, I discovered the viewing lot at the CVG airport soon after my son was born and it’s now one of our favorite places.
Even when he was a baby, we would drive over there, he’d have milk and I’d have coffee, and we would watch the airplanes come and go. As he grew, we’d pick up a nearby Chick-Fil-A lunch and have a picnic in the back of our truck while we watched the landings and takeoffs. I often thought how it would be so great if they had a playground and picnic tables. Well, great minds think alike! CVG has added an adorable play area and this site is now even more kid friendly.
The viewing area is located on Donaldson Highway, very close to Mineola Pike. You pull in to a newly renovated parking lot, with plenty of spaces for prime airplane viewing. On the far side, you’ll find brand new picnic tables and a small play area filled with none other than airplane themed equipment. While there’s no shade, there is always a nice breeze and they even have temporary restrooms available.
If you want to ensure a lot of activity, you can always check the airport schedule ahead of time here, but we always just wing it (wink, wink). Lunchtime is always popular with those on lunch breaks from work and with parents who just want to get out of the house. It really is a beautiful view of the airport and provides excitement for plane loving kids – little and big.
The next time you’re looking for a low-key, free activity; pack a meal or some snacks and head to the CVG viewing area. The kids will love the new playground and you’ll love the laid back fun this area provides.
