Escape Winter at Krohn Conservatory

Winter has only just begun, and already I’m craving sunshine and warmth. I know I’m not alone. Must we wait until March for spring? Maybe not.

Whenever I need a dose of spring, I head to Krohn Conservatory. It’s warm and humid, green and vibrant — and alive. (And if you’re into architecture, you’ll love Krohn’s Art Deco style.) Krohn Conservatory is one of my favorite places in the city — and my kids love it, too!

As the short, dreary days of January and February set in, know you can always escape winter at Krohn Conservatory.

Maybe you go to Krohn’s holiday trains show, or their famed Butterfly Show — but then forget about it the rest of the year. You shouldn’t.

In addition to the fact that there’s pretty much always a seasonal show happening at Krohn, there are also lots of permanent displays kids will love.

There’s an Orchid House with flowers of every hue. There are Palm, Tropical and Desert houses with carnivorous plants, cacti, cacao and banana trees. A tropical waterfall is the main attraction in the rain forest — along with several koi ponds featuring giant fish in bright white and orange hues.

If you’re looking to wear out your kids — there are several different areas to walk around.

Ramps, steps, a “cave” and bridges make for a fun and varied walking experience for kids. Send them on a hunt to find different colored flora or fruit on a tree. Kids love exploring — and Krohn Conservatory is a very kid friendly place to explore!

When your kids need a break, there are lots of places to sit and admire the plants.

If your kids eagerly await the holiday trains exhibit at Krohn, they’ll be pleased to know that there are trains at the conservatory that run all year long!

My kids enjoy watching the old-fashioned locomotive traveling around a wooden track — and the ladybug train is always a big hit, too!

Kids will learn about different plant species and gain an appreciation for the natural world at Krohn Conservatory.

There are over 3,500 plant species inside this local gem! Krohn Conservatory makes a great rainy day refuge, winter escape or little getaway during a too-hot summer day. Inside Krohn Conservatory, it’s always spring.

Krohn Conservatory is located at 1501 Eden Park Drive, 45202. Admission and hours vary by season and can be found here.
