Established as Ohio’s first state park in 1891, Fort Ancient Earthworks & Nature Preserve is one of the most significant ancient American Indian sites in North America. Located in Warren County, Ohio, this 126-acre hilltop enclosure overlooks the scenic Little Miami River and offers families a powerful blend of history, culture and outdoor exploration.
A UNESCO World Heritage Site in Southwest Ohio
Fort Ancient is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, recognizing its global cultural importance. The site features earthen embankments built more than 2,000 years ago by the ancestors of many modern American Indian tribes. Constructed entirely by hand, these massive walls rise more than 23 feet high and stretch around the plateau with more than 67 gateways.
Archaeologists believe Fort Ancient served as a ceremonial gathering place where tribes from across North America came together. Artifacts discovered here — including silver from Canada and obsidian from Wyoming — demonstrate long-distance connections. Research also suggests the earthworks may have functioned as an astronomical calendar aligned with seasonal events.
Today, it remains the largest and best-preserved hilltop enclosure of its kind in North America.
