Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical Jr. opened at the Taft Theatre this weekend, delighting fans of all ages!
A whimsical and vibrant set, outstanding performances by the talented ensemble of young performers, and light-hearted twists on some of Matilda’s darker themes make this the perfect show for young theater-goers (and their parents!)
Matilda, the story of an exceptional young girl who faces the obstacles in her life with the help of her vivid imagination, is a favorite in our house. Matilda the Musical Jr. places more emphasis on Matilda’s storytelling, which was unique, and the catchy tunes and dancing make the musical even more engaging and exciting for young children.
The “dark” parts of the original are much more light-hearted. Mrs. Wormwood (with her Rudolpho) is actually hilarious and Miss Trunchbull is more comical and even playful at times. Miss Honey and Matilda are still our family’s favorites; their singing was incredible and all of the actors had such wonderful stage presence.
In the words of our six-year-old daughter, Mila, it was “Amazing!”
The 70-minute length also made the production perfect for young theatergoers. If you are worried that your child may have a tough time sitting still, don’t be. The production, which is recommended for children ages 4 and up, is engaging from start to finish. The Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati understands their young patrons might have a few wiggles to get out and they intend their performances to be a welcoming place for young theatergoers to experience their first live performances in order to foster a life-long love of theater.
