Little Foodies: The Ugly Duckling

Is breakfast the new dinner? At The Ugly Duckling in Dayton, it certainly is. Open daily 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., The Ugly Duckling is famous for its pancakes, but they are not like your ordinary pancakes. These pancakes are uniquely Ugly Duckling, and made with applesauce and oat milk instead of eggs and whole milk. This makes them thinner and heartier with “crispy edges, rich flavor and a texture all their own,” according to the Ugly Duckling. The pancakes are served three ways: as a full breakfast plate, as a pancake plate or as a single cake. Blueberries or chocolate chips can be added for an extra charge.

Can’t get to the café? No problem. These pancakes can be made at home with The Ugly Duckling’s boxed “Uncle Boof’s World Famous Pancake Mix.” This dry mix can be purchased as a single box, half dozen or a dozen boxes.

Beyond pancakes, The Ugly Duckling offers a full breakfast menu including eggs, French toast, waffles, breakfast burritos and breakfast ZaZa (pizza). Other items include quesadillas and sandwiches ranging from a breakfast sammy to a gravy biscuit sammy and a grilled chicken B.L.T. Burgers are plenty, from the O.G. to the classic smash, duck burger and the quack-o melt. Tater tots are served in various ways, from cheesy bacon to hash and totchos (a tater tot version of nachos). Rounding out the menu are salads and fruit served as a bowl or in a Mason’s jarfait.
