When should you start seeing your OB-GYN for an annual exam, or a well-woman visit?
Experts say you should begin seeing an OB-GYN once you’ve become sexually active, or by age 15. For women turning 19 years old, it’s recommended they schedule a breast and pelvic exam. For those who turn 21, they’re encouraged to schedule a Pap smear. And if you notice complications or if something feels wrong, schedule an appointment immediately
Our goal at Kettering Health is to empower women to enjoy their best health. For many, this begins with their annual visit to their OB-GYN. During your visit, we’ll work together to address your health concerns, whether it’s period pain, pregnancy, or anything else.
What to expect from an appointment
Your well-woman visits are appointments dedicated to just you and your provider to discuss any concerns you may have. One of the best ways to feel at ease during your exam is to know what to expect. Your OB-GYN may discuss topics such as your age, if you’ve started your menstrual cycle, or if you’re sexually active. You’ll want to be ready to share this information with your OB-GYN. Additional topics you may cover include the following:
- Birth control
- Cancer screenings for breast, colon, and other types of cancer
- Medical history
- Concerns about sex
- Depressions screenings
- Health screenings
- Issues with menstruation
- Lifestyle adaptations
- Vaccinations and prevention
- Sexually transmitted infection disease’s
- Preconception
Your provider may also discuss other topics depending on your health needs. Every patient is unique, so our providers tailor your care to each stage of life.
Your OB-GYN is your advocate
These appointments are personal, so we strive to make sure you’re comfortable sharing information with our team. Patients are encouraged to have truthful and candid conversations with their OB-GYN and not to feel embarrassed since it’s important for young women to give and have accurate information about their health. Please remember that all information you share with your professional OB-GYN is confidential. You should feel comfortable speaking to your provider about any concerns and questions you have about menopause, contraception, relationship problems, etc.
Always be honest with your OB-GYN, even if a detail seems too minor or private. If it has to do with your health, it’s important to address. Your OB-GYN is your advocate for your health. And our team is here to help you; not to judge you.
