Getting ready for baby means prepping for the big day—and that includes having a hospital bag packed and ready to go. But what do you really need? We asked local moms from Cincinnati and Dayton what they couldn’t live without during their hospital stay. Here’s a no-fluff list to help you feel confident and prepared:
For Mom:
- Comfy clothing, robe and slippers
- Clean change of clothes to go home in or if you need to extend your stay
- Nursing bras, pads and nipple cream if you plan to breastfeed
- Toiletries (toothbrush, dry shampoo, face wipes)
- Lip balm (trust us!)
- Phone charger with extra-long cord
- Snacks (hospital food isn’t always enough!)
- Insurance info and ID
- A folder for hospital paperwork and baby’s documents
- Your own pillow (with a non-white pillowcase so it doesn’t get mixed up) or blanket!
For Baby:
- Going-home outfit (pack two sizes just in case!)
- Swaddle blanket
- Diapers and wipes (the hospital usually provides, but extras help)
- Car seat (install it in your car early!)
Nice-to-Haves:
- Bluetooth speaker for your labor playlist
- Reusable water bottle (we prefer one with a straw)
- Hair ties or headband
- Thank-you cards or small treats for nursing staff
- Heating Pad
- Tablet loaded with your favorite shows and movies
- Eye mask to get some rest during the day
Bonus Tip: Keep your bag in your car by 36 weeks, just in case. You’ll thank yourself later!
