A Castle Built on Big Dreams
In the early 1920s, Dr. Andrew J. Harness dreamed of building a home and clinic where he could live and care for patients. He and his wife, Mabel, bought land on Mount Wood and started construction on what was meant to be a grand and useful space.
But in 1925, everything changed. Dr. Harness was charged with selling narcotics without the right paperwork—a decision he made to help patients who couldn’t afford their medicine legally. He spent over a year in prison, and when he returned home, the family left the area, leaving the castle unfinished and full of stories.

A Place for Art and Community
Over the years, the unfinished castle became a hangout spot and a canvas for graffiti. In 2015, artist Brian Fencl and the city teamed up to bring new life to the space with bright murals and fresh artwork. While some vandalism still happens, the castle has become a symbol of community pride and creativity.
