Where to Spend Your Martin Luther King Jr. Day around Cincinnati

January officially ushers in winter, the start of a new school semester and – in honor of his January 15th birthday – the opportunity to reflect on the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. As a federal holiday signed into law by President Ronald Reagan in 1983, many schools follow suit by offering the third Monday of the month off from classes too.

Gather outside the Freedom Center, where an interdenominational prayer service begins our solemn and spirit-filled re-enactment of the civil rights era marches for equality, dignity and justice. The march concludes at Washington park with an additional prayer service. The complimentary Rosa Parks Bus provides rides for those who cannot walk a mile uphill in the cold. The annual event in Music Hall features music and three outstanding community leaders, Bishop Ennis F. Tait, Rickell Howard Smith, and Retired Judge Fanon A. Rucker, where each will address one of our three theme words: Love, Power, and Justice.

Enjoy free admission to the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center, educational activities and special talks during the Freedom Center’s MLK Day Celebration.

MLK Day Litter Clean Up with Great Parks | 12p

MLK Day is the only federal holiday that is also a National Day of Service it is the perfect day to celebrate his life by giving back to the community. Please join Great Parks as we walk the streets of Roselawn and pick up litter to honor the late Dr. King. This event takes place from 12pm-2pm. Meet in front of New Prospect Baptist Church. Any children must be accompanied by an adult. Please follow this link to register.

Martin Luther King, Jr. – The Man, The Cause “In and Out of Time” | 7p

In and Out of Time is a musical journey of causes that led Martin Luther King, Jr. to have a powerful dream. It touches on past and current issues that embody Marvin Gaye’s song, “What’s Going On.” The songs infuses the listener with messages of honesty, hope, humility, and respect for human dignity.

Half-Price Reds Hall Of Fame Admission | All Day

In honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, the Reds Hall of Fame and Museum presented by Dinsmore will be offering half-price admission on Monday, Jan. 15. Discounted admission is $6 for adults and $5 for students/seniors. Children 12 and under are admitted free, courtesy of the H.C.S. Foundation. Active military/veterans are admitted free, courtesy of the Sargent Family Foundation.

Ballpark tours on Jan. 15 at 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. will also be half price.
