If you’re looking to get out of town for a few days without going too far or breaking the bank, then consider heading up to Dearborn, Michigan the weekend of July 30-31 for Maker Faire Detroit. The event brings together hundreds of makers sharing personal inventions, mechanical wonders, robotic creations and more. It’s great entertainment and inspiration for the entire family.
We’ve attended a couple of times in the past few years and really enjoyed it. You’ll want at least a day to take in the faire, although plan on staying a full weekend or longer if you also want to check out the Henry Ford Museum, site of the Maker Faire. The museum represents a vast collection of artifacts representing human ingenuity, including everything from a real-life locomotive to presidential vehicles to airplanes. It’s all about big ideas, but not just big things. There’s also furniture, lighting, clockwork, dollhouses and jewelry to name a few smaller things.
If you can take the time to do both, then you’re really seeing the big picture: Our country’s rich history AND its exciting future.
