Great Parks Breaks Ground on ‘Destination Playground’ at Sharon Woods

In an exciting development, Great Parks of Hamilton County has commenced construction on a groundbreaking project – a 10,000-square-foot “destination playground” at Sharon Woods, one of the oldest parks in Greater Cincinnati. This ambitious $3 million undertaking, designed in collaboration with the community, aims to create a playground that seamlessly blends with the park’s natural surroundings, drawing inspiration from the rocky landscape and waterfalls of the Sharon Creek Gorge, as well as the local wildlife.

One of the key features of this inclusive design is an accessible play unit designed to resemble a crayfish, ensuring that children of all abilities can enjoy the space. Additionally, elevated nest structures will encourage climbing and sliding, adding an element of adventure for visitors.

The new playground will more than double the size of the previous outdoor play area near Sharon Centre and will provide convenient access to parking, indoor restrooms, and a picnic area.

Looking ahead, Great Parks has outlined plans to refresh play areas at Sharon Woods Harbor, as well as those at Miami Whitewater Forest, Winton Woods, and Woodland Mound, as part of their master plan released in January 2019. Additionally, the organization has announced intentions to establish a new public park at the former Gamble Estate in Westwood, with design work commencing later this year. The implementation of this project is estimated to take up to seven years, with a budget exceeding $18 million.

The groundbreaking of the “destination playground” at Sharon Woods represents an exciting milestone for Great Parks of Hamilton County and the local community. This innovative and inclusive project aims to provide a memorable and enriching experience for visitors of all ages and abilities, celebrating the natural beauty and heritage of the region. As the construction progresses, anticipation builds for the unveiling of this extraordinary addition to Sharon Woods, further enhancing its status as a beloved regional asset.
