Calling all nature lovers and families! Celebrate Earth Day 2024 in style at the Cincinnati Museum Center (CMC) on Saturday, April 20. Embark on an exciting journey of exploration as you identify local fossils, discover the impact of invasive species, learn how to build a canoe, and so much more. Join us at the CMC for a day filled with Earth-friendly activities that will leave you feeling inspired and connected to our beautiful planet.
Begin your Earth Day adventure with a fascinating session on “Invasive Species and Our Environment” presented by the Department of Agriculture. Delve into the world of invasive species and uncover how they affect our surroundings. Discover the steps we can take to protect our region and maintain its ecological balance. This eye-opening experience is not to be missed and runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the John A. & Judy Ruthven Get Into Nature Gallery.
For those eager to flex their DIY muscles, join the Urban Wilderness Program and learn the art of canoe building. Witness firsthand the craftsmanship and passion that goes into constructing a wood strip canoe. From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., the STEM Lab will be buzzing with creativity as expert builders guide you through the process. Get ready to be inspired and perhaps even embark on your own canoe-building journey.
Unleash your inner paleontologist with Dr. Brenda Hunda, the Curator of Invertebrate Paleontology at the CMC. From 10 a.m. to noon, join her for a captivating session on “Fossil Identification.” Dive into the rich fossil history of our region and explore ancient worlds hidden beneath our feet. This hands-on experience is perfect for fossil enthusiasts and curious minds of all ages.
At 1 p.m., head over to the History in the Making Classroom and engage with the local maker collective, Hive13, for an Earth-friendly making session. Take part in creating seed bombs and crafting with plastic yarn, all while learning about sustainable practices to protect our environment. Discover how small actions can make a big impact in nurturing our planet and promoting a greener lifestyle.
As if all these incredible activities weren’t enough, CMC will be collecting used eclipse glasses to donate to students in Latin America who will experience an eclipse in October this year. By donating your eclipse glasses, you’ll not only help ensure that others can safely enjoy this astronomical event, but you’ll also contribute to the global community of shared experiences. Collection stations will be set up at the John A. & Judy Ruthven Get Into Nature Gallery and the STEM Lab from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., as well as in the History in the Making Classroom from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
