Inspired Learning at Creative Tots

There are a lot of preschools in Greater Cincinnati. In addition, there are also a lot of types of preschools: Montessori. Waldorf. New. Religious. Secular. It’s an overwhelming process, picking a preschool.

Creative Tots is the best of all worlds. It’s a holistic education for kids ages 18 months to 5. There are elements of STEAM education, bilingual education, arts education. There are lots of physical activities to strengthen mind and body. (A yoga teacher comes in to teach kids tree pose.)

Class sizes are small, student-teacher ratios are low and teaches are highly educated and certified. At Creative Tots Mason, the Science Teacher has a BA in Science. She’s taught 4-year-old students about ecology and biology using fun, visual experiments (Be warned: your kid might come home telling you all about red and white blood cells.)

This isn’t just a run-of-the-mill preschool — it’s a school with highly specialized instructors from diverse backgrounds, teaching carefully designed curriculum. Emilie Parry, Director of Creative Tots Mason, prides herself on the school’s progressive program. “Kids absorb and remember so much at a young age, we really want to foster that curiosity and appetite for learning!”

The aesthetic at Creative Tots is fun and definitely kid friendly. One of the preschool rooms boasts a wooden tree house with a slide. The Early 3s room has a big, red barn on one wall. Rainbow colored carpet covers the floor. The walls are bright blue and decorated with lots of collaborative art projects. (The Pre-K room has a lovely dream catcher comprised of wishes and hand-beaded strands from each student.)

The gym is a yoga studio that’s nicer than the private studio I attend — golden wood floors, oversized ceiling fans and floor-to-ceiling mirrors. This is a really fresh and modern take on a preschool — my kids didn’t want to leave!

Creative Tots offers lots of options for families: a more standard preschool experience in the morning, followed by lunch (the campus is milk, egg, peanut and tree nut free), then special enrichment programs. “We want to give parents another option from typical day care — kids can explore lots of subjects and really learn about what they enjoy,” Parry explains. Art, science, yoga, Spanish and music Extended-Day enrichment programs are all offered at Creative Tots. (These programs are part of the standard preschool curriculum as well!) By offering such a well-rounded program that focuses on educating the entire child, the students aren’t only happier — they fare better in Kindergarten, too. According to Parry, the students at Creative Tots typically test in the 98th percentile for Kindergarten readiness.

Service and stewardship is also a prominent part of the Creative Tots mission. The school participates in lots of volunteer programs, focusing on the more creative opportunities in the community. When I visited, a school-wide toy drive was underway, with gifts piled beneath a Christmas tree in the lobby.

Above all, the school aims to encourage creativity and a love for learning in its students, says Parry. “If kids have fun, they’ll want to learn more!”

If all this sounds like what you’ve been looking for in a preschool, call and set up a tour today! Enrollment for the 2017-18 school year starts in January. Another option for your kids is Creative Tots’ Summer Camp — registration is in March, and campers don’t have to be current students at the school.
