I am a huge fan of musical theatre and I not so secretly hope my children will be, too. Although they are only 4 and 2.5, they’ve seen their fair share of shows, performances and ballets and it’s generally a successful experience! The perfect opportunity to introduce children to theatre has arrived at the Aronoff Center – Matilda the Musical!
This charming show was a big surprise for me, as it is now at the top of my list as an all-time favorite!
I am always amazed at the talent required to perform on a live stage, especially so when it’s done by children. In Matilda, the child actors take center stage and will keep you smiling from start to finish. Whether or not you’ve read the classic Roald Dahl book or seen the movie (although I highly recommend you do both), you will enjoy this musical. Matilda the character is clever, quick-witted and charming, as is the show itself.
If you plan on taking young kids to the musical, I have a few tips. If possible, try to get seats on the end of a row for any emergencies or meltdowns. Wait to head to your seats until the bell rings to notify you it’s a few minutes before show time. You’ll be sitting for a while, so it’s best to keep it at a minimum. Let your little ones pick out a treat or two (and maybe a glass of wine for you!) and take it to your seats. This was big for my kids! Be sure to ask for a seat cushion for added height in the seats. Most importantly, know your kids! I’ve found that 4 seems to be the perfect age to start this tradition. My 2.5 year old enjoyed the show, but definitely got antsy.
The inspiring story and colorful characters of Matilda come to life in this award-winning musical. The music is addictive and the lyrics incredibly clever. You’ll see everything from kids flying through the sky to stellar dance performances. Matilda the Musical is a delightful experience for all ages and the perfect family outing in Cincinnati this spring.
Matilda the Musical runs now through April 16th at the Aronoff Center for the Arts. For more info and to order tickets, visit their website here.
About Andrea:
A native Cincinnatian, Andrea has experienced life in all four corners of this city. After growing up on the west side, she headed north to attend Miami University, then moved east to Hyde Park and now lives in Northern Kentucky with her family.
When she’s not playing trains and doing the “hot dog dance” as a stay-at-home mom to her two toddlers, Andrea is busy writing for Cincinnati publications and brainstorming ideas for her next children’s book! With a newfound passion for fitness and overall health, she spends a lot of time at her family gym and loves to play outside.
Andrea worked in education for several years and has a special love for children’s literature. She loves showing her children all our city has to offer and enjoys sharing her finds with other parents. Her favorite spots include the Cincinnati Zoo (although she steers clear of the bird house), her local library and any playground.
