Dayton Metro Library will extend two of its popular programs for students into the virtual world this fall. Both new and returning members are welcome to join.
Homeschool Club @ Home offers educational and fun learning activities for children ages 6 – 12. Topics include science, social studies, creative writing and more. The program is free and takes place the second Thursday each month, 1:00 – 2:00 pm, September 10, October 8, November 12, and December 10.
“Kids will be able to explore familiar topics like media and technology literacy, math, and science while gaining proficiency in using a virtual meeting platform,” said Julie Buchanan, DML Programming Manager. “It’s a great fusion of 21st century skills.”
Meanwhile, middle schoolers in grade 6 – 8 are invited to join the virtual book club, Page Turners: Battle of the Books. This club takes place online via Webex on Tuesdays, 3:00 – 4:00 pm, September 8 & 22, October 6 & 20, November 3 & 17, December 1 & 15.
Each meeting, students will vote on what types of books they want to read. Book Club leaders will come up with a variety of titles for the group to select from, and participants can read as many or as few as they like. At the following meeting, the group will vote on their favorites, and the cycle continues until December, when one book will be chosen Best Book of the Battle!
“It’s more than just reading and talking about books kids like,” said Buchanan. “Each month the club gets closer to their goal of choosing the group’s favorite book.”
Participants in these online programs will need a stable internet connection, a microphone enabled device or headset and, if desired, a webcam. Those without internet access can participate by phone. Once participants are registered, they will receive details on how to join the meeting on the day of the event.
