Linden Grove School

More than 30 years ago, Linden Grove School emerged as a nurturing, parent-driven sanctuary for students who needed an alternative to the conventional, uniform approach of traditional education. Today, LGS continues to create a safe and nurturing school experience for our autistic and neurodivergent students that encompasses our three-pronged approach, where academics, social-emotional learning, and therapeutic support are equally important. We believe in maintaining small class sizes, with academic classes having no more than 6 to 8 students, to provide a focused and personalized learning experience. We strive to provide all of the same experiences that students have access to at the local school but with all the built-in support needed for our students to be successful. Students participate in field trips, after-school activities, and school dances.
Our “wholistic” approach elevates every aspect of our students’ education, ensuring they reach their highest potential.

Q&A with Linden Grove School:

What makes Linden Grove School unique?

Our small class sizes and team-based model allow for the creation of individualized programming that meets the students where they are, supporting them in areas where they may struggle and pushing them into areas where they excel. These supports include a variety of specialized intervention programs like Orton-Gillingham, Visualizing & Verbalizing, Seeing Stars, Expanding Expression Tool, and Touch Math. Social-emotional learning and therapeutic supports, like speech and language therapy, occupational therapy, and behavior support, are core components of our program. Social skills is a class that happens daily and incorporates teaching interception and executive functioning in addition to traditional social skills topics. Our Director of Therapeutic Services coordinates with staff to ensure that all of these crucial services are integrated throughout the day.

What is Linden Grove School’s age/grade range?

We serve students in grades kindergarten through 8th.

What is your enrollment policy? Are there any key dates parents should be aware of?

It all starts with a conversation. Prospective families can start the process by scheduling a conversation with Kristin Tennyson, Head of School, to discuss their goals and desires for their child and learn answers to questions about the program. If you are unsure whether you are ready to make a change or if LGS will suit your family, we recommend starting with a phone call. More confident families are welcome to begin with the tour.

We recommend family apply as far in advance as possible. We frequently have a waitlist that can extend longer than a year.

Do you offer financial assistance?

We are an Autism Scholarship and Jon Peterson Scholarship provider. Families can apply for Linden Grove School-provided tuition assistance to help fill the gap between scholarship and tuition. Assistance is given based on need, and up to $5000 can be awarded to each family.

What are the standard school day hours?

Our school day begins at 8:30am and ends at 3:10pm.

Does Linden Grove School offer before/after school care? Does Linden Grove School offer afterschool activities?

We offer before-school care beginning at 7:30am and after-school care until 5:30pm. After-school activities are continuously offered and rotated on a quarterly basis. A sampling of some of the activities we have offered includes Taekwondo, bowling, tech & gaming, yoga, and We Rock the Spectrum sensory gym. Some activities are facilitated offsite with transportation provided to the activity.

Is there a uniform or dress code?

Students can wear school-appropriate, sensory-friendly clothing of their choosing.

Does Linden Grove School have a homework policy?

We believe that homework is a useful tool if properly designed and geared to the individual’s specific development and needs. Homework may be assigned to help the student become more self-reliant, learn to work independently, practice rote memorization skills, provide repetition, or practice and improve skills being developed. Homework assignments also allow parents to acquaint themselves with their child’s progress and program. Students may receive some homework nightly (M-Th); however, Linden Grove School firmly believes that students must have time to develop other interests and hobbies and have adequate family time during the week and on the weekends. Therefore, Linden Grove School’s policy is never to give homework on weekends except when a parent requests it or if a child has make-up work to complete. We strongly believe that homework needs and benefits differ amongst students and families. Therefore, parents are asked to complete a Homework Analysis Form during the first week of school so teachers can develop an optimum plan with parents.

How many children attend Linden Grove School? How many students are in the average classroom?

We currently serve 125 students. Our school uses a team-based model, encompassing four multigrade-level teams: K-2, 2-4, 4-6, and 6-8. The number of classrooms on each team ranges from four to seven. No matter the team academic classes do not exceed 6 to 8 students.

Does Linden Grove School offer support for students with special needs?

Our school’s primary focus is to provide a specialized education for autistic and neurodivergent students.

What specialty classes / extracurricular activities does Linden Grove School offer (gym, art, language, sports etc.)?

Middle School students are given the opportunity to pick their own electives which range from Robotics to Music in the Media.
