NEW Dial-a-Story from Dayton Metro Library

Dayton Metro Library has begun offering Dial-a-Story: free, recorded stories children can listen to by phone any time of day or night. Three different stories for young children are currently available, with more coming soon. Listeners can reach Dial-a-Story at 937-250-7500.

“Dial-a-Story is perfect for parents who need something to occupy their child on the bus, in the car, or waiting in line,” said DML Programming Manager Julie Buchanan. “Children can listen to the story, then re-tell it to their parents in their own words.”

Three new stories will be offered each month. November’s stories are:

  1. Thank You Omu by Age Mora

  2. Burger Boy by Alan Durant

  3. Sky Blanket created and told by Omope Carter Daboiku

“Today’s technology means children get an awful lot of visual stimulation, and sometimes it’s just too much,” said Buchanan. “Dial-a-Story lets children imagine the characters and actions however they choose. It develops their listening skills, and dialing the number themselves can even be helpful practice with numbers.”

The Library suspended in-person storytimes and other popular family programs for the time being, due to COVID-related limitations on public gatherings. In December, however, the Library will begin offering live, interactive storytime sessions via Webex. Video storytimes, STEM activities, and other programs are viewable anytime on DML’s Facebook page.

Dial-a-Story is free at 937-250-7500. For more information, visit DaytonMetroLibrary.org or call the Ask Me Line at 937-463-2665.
