Ohio’s campgrounds will reopen May 21

Ohio is slowly reopening, and this week marks a significant milestone for the summer. Ohio’s campgrounds will reopen May 21 — but with special guidelines.

Campground operators, vendors and campers must adhere to strict guidelines to keep everyone safe. Here’s what you need to know:

1. All campers will be reminded to wear a mask when entering buildings or interacting with other campers.

2. All campground restrooms and public facilities will follow rigorous cleaning standards.

Restrooms will be sanitized in the morning and evening, as well as during peak usage times. Operators will also make sure soap dispensers are fully stocked at all times and provide hand sanitizer where water is not available. The number of people inside these facilities at a given time should be limited in order to follow social distancing guidelines.

3. Many campground amenities will remain closed.

Ohio campground operators are mandated to close any nonessential buildings or areas where people could potentially congregate. These include pavilions, pools and splash pads, recreation centers, gyms, playgrounds, jump pads/pillows, go-karts, pedal-karts, game rooms, basketball, volleyball and gaga ball.

4. Campground operators will be installing barriers and protective shields to maintain a safe distance between all customers.

In addition, retail equipment will be sanitized after every use.

5. All campground employees must perform a daily symptom assessment before coming to work to monitor for any COVID-19-related symptoms.

The same goes for campers — don’t go out if you’re feeling unwell.

6. Only one family household may occupy each campsite at a time.

Also, there must be 10 people or fewer at a campsite. Campers must remain 6 feet apart from individuals from other households in all areas of the campgrounds to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Campers are not allowed to gather in groups. All campers should practice self-contained camping when possible.
