Andrea Limke isn’t just a super talented Cincinnati Parent Reporter. She’s also a published author! Just last week, Andrea’s very first children’s book, The Hippo at My Window, was released. A former teacher, Andrea combined her love for children’s literature, talent for writing and son’s humorous musings to create this wonderful children’s book. As Andrea’s Editor, I was lucky enough to chat with her one-on-one about The Hippo in My Window — and guess what? You can chat with Andrea, too, as she’ll be at Cincinnati Parent’s KidsFEST this weekend to read from her new book, meet her readers — and chat all things hippos!
What inspired you to write The Hippo at My Window?
My son! When he was about one, he would look at the window in our bedroom, point and say, “Hippo!” I have no idea if he really saw a hippo or if it was the way the curtains fell, but the idea stuck.
Why a hippo?
Beyond my son’s inspiration, I just love hippos. Unlike their real characteristics, my fictional hippo is lovable, playful and makes a great best friend!
What lessons should readers take from the book?
I hope readers finish this book with a smile on their faces. I wanted to bring a story to life that brings joy and inspires creativity.
What age is your book best suited for?
While the reading level is first grade, the story is great for all ages! My toddlers love the hippo and reading it together. I think all families would enjoy the playfulness and fun.
Who are your favorite authors?
This could be a long answer, so I’ll stick with children’s books! My all-time favorite is The Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister. I also love Laura Numeroff books, especially If You Give a Pig a Pancake. And thanks to my children, I am now a huge fan of Sherri Dusker Rinker and Goodnight, Goodnight, Construction Site.
Any plans for more books?
Definitely! I’d love to do more with the hippo and I have many other ideas in the works as well. I’ll house all of my books under Dreaming Hippo Literary Creations, so stay tuned for more! The illustrator, Courtney Jayne Snow, already has several other books available!
Both Andrea and Courtney will be at KidsFEST from 1-4 p.m. with a fresh stack of hot-off-the-press books available to purchase, along with a fabulous giveaway! The two will be leading a story time at 3 p.m. that we are all very much looking forward to!
