Pedal powered rail vehicles date back to at least the 1850’s, when maintenance workers used hand-cars and ‘rail bikes’ to travel along the tracks. They were used to transport crew and materials for track inspection and repairs. Today, there are a variety of designs in use around the world.

The Bluegrass Division brings the Rail Explorers experience to the countryside outside Lexington, Kentucky, the horse capital of the world and the heart of Bourbon country. The depot is about 20 minutes from downtown Lexington and about an hour from Louisville. Rail Explorers partners with the Bluegrass Scenic Railroad & Museum, and tours run on the historic Louisville Southern Railroad, built in 1888.
On this 10 mile round trip you’ll pass thoroughbred horse farms where you may see mares and foals in the fields before descending into deep cuts through the limestone hills.
Bring a drink and snack to enjoy at the Tyrone turnaround, perched high above the Kentucky River. From there you’ll see the Wild Turkey Distillery and the decommissioned Young’s High Bridge, 1,659 feet long and 283 feet above the river. Every railbike is fitted with the REX Propulsion System, a custom-built electric motor that makes the ride effortless.

Rail Explorers FAQs
Can children ride the rail explorers?
Yes. The railbikes are easy to ride and children of all ages are welcome. Each railbike must have a rider at least 16 years old to operate the brakes. Groups of children can ride together on their own explorer, as long as it’s coupled to an adult’s.
All riders must be secured in their own seat, with one exception: infants can ride secured in a baby carrier worn by an adult rider (bring your own carrier). Toddler harnesses are available for extra security. It is not safe for children to be seated on your lap, and this is strictly forbidden.
How do the tours work?
All the railbikes leave at the same time, with a guide at the front of the group and a guide at the rear. Riders spread out roughly 100 feet apart, so each group travels at its own pace and in its own space. At the turnaround, guides use hydraulic lifts to spin the railbikes around while riders take a 15 to 30 minute break.
How can I pass a slower rider?
Passing isn’t possible, and that’s the point. A slower rider ahead just means more time to relax and take in the ride. Leave plenty of space for the riders in front of and behind you, and don’t tailgate.
What about riders coming the other way?
Tours are timed so every railbike reaches the turnaround before the group heads back.
What should I bring? Is there a place to put a bag or backpack?
Each railbike has a basket for bags, backpacks, cameras, phones or water bottles, plus a deck under the seats for coolers or additional bags. Umbrellas are provided on every railbike in case of rain or for shade on hot days. Some riders bring a blanket for cooler temperatures.
