Every night from Nov. 27 through Dec. 30, someone at Historic Clifton Mill flips one switch, and more than 5 million lights come on at once across the mill, the gorge, the riverbanks, the trees and the bridges. The mill in Clifton, about 30 miles east of Dayton, has been putting on the Legendary Lights for nearly four decades. The display has been featured in Midwest Living, Ohio Magazine and USA Today and on ABC’s “The Great Christmas Light Fight.”

The headliners are a 100-foot “waterfall” of lights down the gorge and a 20-foot Twinkling Tree of Lights with 7,000 bulbs beside the water wheel. There’s also a Miniature Village, a Santa Claus Museum and a toy collection. Every hour on the hour, all 5 million lights go dark and the old covered bridge runs a light show synchronized to Christmas music. Then everything snaps back on at once, which is the part your kids will still be talking about on the drive home. Plan your walk so you’re near the bridge at the top of the hour.
Through Dec. 23, you can peek into Santa’s Workshop and watch a live Santa at work. Every 15 minutes or so, he checks his list and heads up the chimney to load his sleigh. He’s on the clock, so there’s no lap-sitting and no photos.
The mill serves hot dogs, barbecue pork sandwiches, soup, cornbread, hot chocolate, cookies, pie and popcorn every night except Christmas, so you can skip dinner beforehand.
Hours, Admission and Parking
- Dates: Nightly, Nov. 27 through Dec. 30.
- Hours: Gates open at 5 p.m., and the lights come on at 6 p.m. Gates close at 9 p.m., and the lights go off 30 minutes later.
- Christmas Eve and Christmas Day: Gates close at 8 p.m.
- Admission: $15 for ages 4 and older. Kids 3 and under are free. Groups of 15 or more get $1 off per person when one person pays for the whole group.
- Payment: Cash gets you through the gate fastest. Mastercard and Visa, including debit cards with those logos, are accepted with a convenience fee. Clifton Mill gift certificates work too.
- Parking: Free.
- Crowds: Monday through Thursday is much quieter. Saturday is the busiest night.
- Weather: The display doesn’t open in severe weather or heavy rain. Check the website or call 937-767-5501 before you head out.
- Strollers and accessibility: The grounds are stroller and wheelchair accessible, but strollers aren’t allowed inside the buildings.
