The New School

As many of you probably know, our family recently moved from the city to the burbs.

A few weeks ago I posted asking whether or not to switch schools for our first grader Eloise in the middle of the year or commute down to the old school each morning for the rest of the school year.

Thanks for all the opinions, advice and suggestions. I may not respond to all comments, but I do read and appreciate all of them.

My wife and I debated all the pros and cons of staying at the current school versus moving to the new school in the middle of the school year. After much thought we decided to move her to the new school.

In case any of you are in a similar situation, here’s our list of reasons why we switched schools mid-year.

-Our thinking was, she is going to be the “new kid” eventually, it’s better to do it sooner rather than later.

-We are able to learn the new procedures and the rules of the school now. That way we will feel up to speed and ready for second grade when the time comes.

-Make the friends she would ultimately keep. I’m sure she will remain friends with a few kids from her old school, but lets face it, most of her time will be spent with kids from the neighborhood and the new school.

-Shorten our family’s commute. We are a quarter-mile from the new school. It would be crazy for us to drive past it every morning then prepare for 30 minutes of a bumper to bumper commute., and then do it AGAIN at the end of the school day.

We are on our third week and so far I would say it’s a success. The transition has been pretty smooth. As much as we miss everyone at the old school, we are happy to be a part of the new school and we are glad we made the switch sooner rather than later.

-Pete
