Sometimes, you just need an ice cream sundae. Nothing else will do. The mix of creamy ice cream, sticky fudge sauce, crunchy nuts and sweet fruit topping — what’s better than that? And while we definitely have our share of fabulous ice cream parlors in Cincinnati, for a classic ice cream sundae, you have to go to Aglamesis.
With two locations in Oakley Square and Montgomery Plaza, Aglamesis is the quintessential, old-fashioned ice cream parlor. From its pink decor, tile floors, classic steel bowls and spoons, outdoor tables and case upon case of homemade chocolates (the Opera Creams are life-changing), a trip to Aglamesis is an experience.

We recently stopped by the Oakley parlor for an after-lunch treat lunch, on an unreasonably hot afternoon. It was so hot, in fact, that the only reasonable thing to do was go out for ice cream.
We were immediately greeted by two very friendly servers (in fact, you’ll get your ice cream and drinks hand-delivered to your table!), plus an adorable older gentleman who gave my kids chocolate candies as they sat at the counter. While we were there, a few families wandered in, and making easy conversation with us and the servers. Aglamesis truly is a very special, family place.
With one milk allergy and two vegans in our house, Aglamesis has lots of options. There are five flavors of Italian Ice from which to choose, plus fresh-made fruit toppings — so the dairy-free members of our family were very happy.
My husband and 5 year old, meanwhile, decided to go big! They ordered a two-scoop, two-topping sundae, which is the stuff dreams are made of: chocolate and vanilla ice cream, hot fudge, chopped walnuts and a homemade strawberry sauce that my husband unabashedly stole from my son.
If you’re looking for an excuse to go to Aglamesis, here are two: July is National Ice Cream Month and also the hottest month in Cincinnati. (And, a third: you and your family will have a blast at this cozy ice cream parlor that’s oozing with warm-and-fuzzy nostalgia.)
My tip: if you’re going with a big group, get the French Quarter Bonanza. Trust me. This infamous, family-sized sundae features 8 scoops of ice cream (plus toppings!) in a glass bowl that’s probably bigger than your kids’ heads.
Is there a better way to bond as a family than over ice cream? I think not.
