Q&A with The Summit Country Day School:
What makes Summit Summer at The Summit Country Day School unique?
Summit Summer camp provides an opportunity for children to gather from many areas to enjoy summer fun. It is open to students from all schools and serves toddlers through grade 12.
What activities are offered at Summit Summer at The Summit Country Day School?
The Summit Country Day School’s signature Traditional Day Camp has 8 weeks of summer, each with a theme which centers our games, activities and crafts. Each week we will get unplugged and into nature as we enjoy being a child in the summertime!
Other summer camp opportunities include: Pottery, Roblox Computer Coding, Dance, Theatre, Photography, ACT & HSPT Prep, Health (for credit), Athletics, Red Cross Certifications, etc. The fun goes on & on!
What is the camper-to-counselor ratio?
Our groups are typically between 6-9 campers to a teacher, assistant or counselor (depending on age & level of needed instruction).
How much time do the campers spend outside?
Much time is spent outdoors exploring nature and our beautiful campus in the heart of Hyde Park. Weather permitting, we enjoy multiple activities outdoors each day.
Does the camp provide lunch/snacks or do parents need to provide them?
Parents will send campers with a packed lunch each day to enjoy with friends. Summit Summer is a peanut free camp and can accommodate other allergies or food sensitivities. We are working to have an easy identification system (stickers, wrist bands, etc.) for when students have allergies or sensitivities so camp teachers & counselors are always aware.
What is the typical daily schedule for campers?
This answer would depend on which one of the many choices in offerings you make!
How old are the counselors and how are they trained?
Instructors and Teachers are always legal adults (18 years +). Many instructors are current staff @ Summit Country Day School.
The counselors may be high school or college students & participate in our Upper School Leadership training. They are trained in basic first aid, as well as how to handle children in a camp environment. Any counselor under the age of 18 is always supervised by an additional adult.
What accommodations are made for campers with special needs?
Our camp is not YET equipped to handle children with significant developmental needs. Our new Camp Manager (Shayleigh Holbrook) has 8 years of experience working in a variety of disability settings and will offer supports to summer camp teachers, staff & counselors when needed. Summit’s Behavior Specialist will also be available as an additional consulting resource for summer camp staff. We aim for all children to enjoy a traditional camp environment with many activities, location changes, transitions and games/crafts requiring basic motor skills.
If you are concerned about Summit being able to support your child’s needs, please contact Shayleigh Holbrook ([email protected]) with questions.
