Q&A with Camp Nuhop:
What makes Camp Nuhop unique?
Nuhop has a 3:8 staff to camper ratio to ensure every camper gets plenty of support and attention. All counselors are certified in crisis prevention and intervention. Staff work closely with families before camp to ensure each child is placed in a group that fits their needs and abilities.
What activities are offered at Camp Nuhop?
All campers swim, hike, canoe, use the slip and slide, cook on the campfire, make crafts, and have camp outs under the stars. Specialty themed camps also travel to fun locations, create art or science projects, and do other themed activities.
What is the camper-to-counselor ratio?
8 campers to 3 counselors
How much time do the campers spend outside?
Campers sleep under the stars for 2 nights and participate in outdoor activities every day.
Does Camp Nuhop provide lunch/snacks or do parents need to provide them?
Food is provided. Special diets can be accommodated with advanced notice.
What is the typical daily schedule for campers?
Campers eat breakfast at the dining hall each morning, followed by activities such as swimming or canoeing. Lunch is sometimes in the dining hall, and sometimes eaten on-the-go for groups traveling off-site or completing an all-day hike. The afternoon is packed with fun activities before dinner. In the evenings, there may be special events like “Song Fest.” Campers alternate between sleeping in cabins and camping under the stars at night. Campers are told their daily schedule each morning or shown a visual version to help with those who need a structured routine.
How old are the counselors and how are they trained?
Counselors are college students or recent graduates who have a comprehensive 2-week training including crisis prevention and intervention training. They are mostly education and psychology majors. Some staff have additional certifications to lead activities such as archery or the high ropes course.
What accommodations are made for campers with special needs?
The majority of campers at Nuhop have special needs, so staff are trained to adapt activities to suit every level of ability. Visual aids for non-speaking campers are readily available, as well as emotional regulation tools, fidgets, and a sensory room for campers who need extra support to regulate their bodies and minds.
Is Camp Nuhop an overnight camp?
Yes
Overnight Camp Questions
What does the camper’s living situation look like?
Campers sleep in rustic cabins with bunk beds. Restrooms and shower facilities are located near each cabin in separate buildings. Campers will be escorted to the facilities if they need to use them at night. Some nights, campers will sleep under the stars.
How do parents and campers communicate?
Parents can send letters via email. When campers write responses, they are scanned and emailed back. If campers are having trouble adjusting or have unmet needs, staff will often call home to inform the parents and work together to create solutions.
How does Camp Nuhop handle homesickness?
Many campers feel relieved with a simple letter home, but if the problem persists, staff work with the family one-on-one to help the camper overcome their homesickness. Many of our campers also enjoy quiet time in the sensory room or a visit from the camp owner’s dog as a tool to regulate their emotions.
What are the meals like at Camp Nuhop?
Campers have three meals per day plus snacks. Most are served family-style in the cafeteria. In addition to the main meal option, there is a cereal and yogurt bar at breakfast and a salad bar at lunch and dinner. Most of our campers have special dietary needs, so our cooks can accommodate just about any allergy or preference as long as they are notified in advance.
Can parents visit Camp Nuhop?
Parents can visit for our open house before the summer camp season begins, but there are no visitors allowed during camp sessions.
What percentage of campers return every year?
More than half of our campers return from year to year, and many stick with us every summer until they age out of our program.
Is the schedule highly structured, or do kids have a lot of free choices?
The schedule is structured to support those with a need for routine, but there are plenty of times where campers get to provide input into the activities they will do.
Is transportation available to and from Camp Nuhop?
No
