A Whimsical Wonderland at Krohn Conservatory

There are two things for certain as we approach this holiday season – despite my planning and efforts, I will still be shopping on Christmas Eve, and more importantly, Krohn Conservatory will bring back their beautiful display of poinsettias and trains. This year’s exhibit will go beyond your expectations and will charm you right into the holiday spirit. We were lucky enough to get a sneak peek of this Whimsical Wonderland at Krohn Conservatory– we’ve been waiting all year – and it is pure magic.

Krohn’s amazing staff and the talented Applied Imagination team have created a space that is equal parts enchanting and festive. The room is filled with a variety of colors – poinsettias in red, white, pink, blue, yellow and purple – and of course the train display is back and intertwined among the foliage. Your family can spend hours in the exhibit and still not pick out every detail in the display. They’ve named it, “A Whimsical Wonderland,” and that is exactly what it is. The first half of the room is filled with whimsy – playful buildings and plants, and the sounds of trains zipping around, making your eyes dart in every direction. The back half of the room shows off the intricately built replicas of Cincinnati landmarks, from the Tyler Davidson fountain to Krohn itself.

My son, especially, loves trains. We have seen just about every train display in this city and this is the one he talks about the most. He stood looking up at the multiple bridges for several minutes, jumping up and down in excitement. Both of my children loved the incline as well, watching the car go up and down.  If you have a Thomas the Train fan, you’ll find him there too, sporting a Santa hat!

There are many other activities in conjunction with the exhibit this year. Be sure to stop by the “Photo Loco” area for a picture behind the large botanical train, complete with buttons and sounds. Also, be on the look out for the pixie elves hidden throughout all of the displays. Your family can snap an #ElfieSelfie and be entered into a drawing for a Macy’s gift card!

Throughout the show’s run there are many special events that are perfect for some festive family fun. They’re hosting a breakfast with Santa, homemade crafts on Saturdays and “Krohn by Candlelight” on Wednesday evenings, including visits from Tinkerbell and Fauna! Be sure to check out the Krohn Conservatory website for times, pricing and registration information.

andrea-limke-bio-picAbout Andrea:

A native Cincinnatian, Andrea has experienced life in all four corners of this city. After growing up on the west side, she headed north to attend Miami University, then moved east to Hyde Park and now lives in Northern Kentucky with her family.

When she’s not playing trains and doing the “hot dog dance” as a stay-at-home mom to her two toddlers, Andrea is busy writing for Cincinnati publications and brainstorming ideas for her next children’s book! With a newfound passion for fitness and overall health, she spends a lot of time at her family gym and loves to play outside.

Andrea worked in education for several years and has a special love for children’s literature. She loves showing her children all our city has to offer and enjoys sharing her finds with other parents. Her favorite spots include the Cincinnati Zoo (although she steers clear of the bird house), her local library and any playground.
