If you’ve ever driven south from Cincinnati, along 71/75, then surely you’ve noticed the home of the Florence Freedom baseball team. Just past the US 42 exit, on the left when heading south, the stadium is conveniently located just off the highway and it has always perked my interest, especially since we moved to Northern Kentucky almost 10 years ago. I love baseball and have always wanted to take my kids to a baseball game, but for some reason it seemed like a lot of work. And what if they got bored? Or hot? Or wanted to leave after an hour, despite spending a decent amount of money on tickets, parking, etc.? Well, the Florence Freedom has solved these issues and has created a baseball experience that’s truly for families.
The convenience of this outing was evident right from the beginning with the free parking and short walk to the entrance of the stadium. Our kids were immediately excited by the huge inflatables and playground, viewable from just outside. The thing I loved the most about this experience was that the stadium and team still provide a classic baseball game, with all the expected snacks and quality sports viewing, while making it all very kid-friendly. The Kids Zone, located at the end of the third base line, has a large playground and an inflatable bounce house and large slide (these two do cost a little extra), and it’s also where you can often meet your kids’ favorite characters! We happened to be there for PBS Kids night and got to meet Daniel Tiger and Buddy the Dinosaur from Dinosaur Train — two of our favorites!
The size of the stadium makes everything very doable, even with young children. We sat right behind home plate (you’ll be surprised how affordable the tickets are!) and our kids really got into the game. They cheered and danced to the music as each player came up to bat. In between each inning, the awesome Freedom staff hosts games, contests and even a race across the field for young fans. It was interactive, entertaining and just plain fun.
Along with the entertaining baseball that is played at UC Health Stadium, the games are often host to themes, character meet and greets, concerts and even fireworks! Kids can run the bases after each game and get autographs of their favorite Freedom players. Coming up on July 30th, the stadium will also host a show just for the kids (no game will be played)! Kidtopia Live will perform right on a stage, set up on the field, and will include Bob the Builder, Octonauts and PJ Masks!
There are plenty of opportunities left this summer to take your family to a Florence Freedom game. For more info on tickets, promos and special events, check out their website here.
About Andrea:
A native Cincinnatian, Andrea has experienced life in all four corners of this city. After growing up on the west side, she headed north to attend Miami University, then moved east to Hyde Park and now lives in Northern Kentucky with her family.
When she’s not playing trains and doing the “hot dog dance” as a stay-at-home mom to her two toddlers, Andrea is busy writing for Cincinnati publications and brainstorming ideas for her next children’s book! With a newfound passion for fitness and overall health, she spends a lot of time at her family gym and loves to play outside.
Andrea worked in education for several years and has a special love for children’s literature. She loves showing her children all our city has to offer and enjoys sharing her finds with other parents. Her favorite spots include the Cincinnati Zoo (although she steers clear of the bird house), her local library and any playground.
