Since their serendipitous inception in a Southern Utah piano shop, THE PIANO GUYS have established themselves as an unstoppable musical force. At their core are Jon Schmidt (pianist, songwriter) and Steven Sharp Nelson (cellist, songwriter), whose dynamic performances and creative synergy have captivated audiences worldwide.
In 2023, THE PIANO GUYS unveiled their 13th album, Unstoppable, a compilation of exhilarating and emotionally profound cover songs written over the past two years. Since their official debut in 2011, THE PIANO GUYS have released 13 albums, including six No.1 debuts on Billboard’s Top Classical Albums chart.
Their music has amassed over 2 billion global streams, while their YouTube videos have been viewed 2.4 billion times. Their Spotify presence alone boasts nearly 2 million monthly listeners. Jon and Steven have sold out concert venues across the globe, from Royal Albert Hall in London to iconic Sydney Opera House to Carnegie Hall and stunning Red Rocks! THE PIANO GUYS’ unique brand has earned recognition from publications like The New York Times, Fast Company, BuzzFeed, and Mashable, with appearances on “CBS Sunday Morning,” “TODAY Show,” “Good Morning America,” and “The Tonight Show.”
Initially, the group started with Paul Anderson, a renowned piano store owner turned producer and videographer, Jon Schmidt, pianist, Steven Sharp Nelson, cellist, and Al van der Beek, a music producer; they established THE PIANO GUYS as a YouTube channel showcasing piano and cello performances in nature. Collectively, they took YouTube by storm, accumulating over 2 billion views for their classical crossover music videos, which were filmed amidst scenic natural landscapes and several of the Seven Wonders of the World.
“Who would have ever thought that middle-aged dads from Utah filming classically influenced music in nature could ever succeed at the outset?” asks Steven Sharp Nelson. “Our favorite thing is to find a way to be on the fringes of possibility. We like to combine things you would never expect to find together – but are close enough to make sense. It has been our mindset from the beginning.”
