Inclusive Playground Opens in Northern Kentucky

A new, inclusive playground has just opened in Northern Kentucky. Redwood, a disability service in Ft. Mitchell, recently celebrated its new playground with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, which was quickly christened by children’s laughter.

“This new playground is critical for the physical development of our clients,” said Katrina Proud, Redwood’s Director of Educational Care.  “The ability to climb and move their bodies through play is important, especially for our clients who need therapy for gross motor, fine motor, bilateral and visual motor coordination.”

The new playground, which features wheel chair accessible ramps, ensures that all Redwood clients have the ability to enjoy the structures.  Two large awnings cover the play area to shield the structures, and busy children from the sun. This inclusive playground fills a void for clients who are unable to utilize play areas available at local parks.

This playground was made possible by generous support from the following organizations: The Greater Cincinnati Foundation, Hatton Foundation, Elsa M. Heisel Sule Foundation, The Andrew Jergens Foundation, Messer Construction Co. Foundation, RC Durr Foundation, Earnst Concrete, Deakins Construction, and Zalla Companies.

Redwood is an accredited facility through CARF (Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities) and NAEYC (National Association for the Education of Young Children) and helps children and adults with disabilities. Redwood serves over 800 clients each year through its 22 comprehensive programs ranging from educational, therapeutic and vocational services.  Its state-of-the-art facility allows clients to learn, interact and receive vocational training, while building upon their social skills in order to achieve the quality of life they deserve.
